Stanislao, italienischer Chemiker, * Palermo 13. 7. 1826, ✝ Rom 10. 5. 1910; nahm 1848 an der sizilianischen Revolution teil und floh vorübergehend nach Frankreich; Professor in Alessandria (1851-55), Genua, Palermo und seit 1871 in Rom. Cannizzaro erkannte die Bedeutung der avogadroschen Hypothese für die Klärung der Begriffe Atom, Molekül und Äquivalent und setzte die Ansichten Avogadros auf dem internationalen Chemikerkongress in Karlsruhe 1860 durch. Die von ihm 1853 entdeckte Cannizzaro-Reaktion (Disproportionierung von Aldehyden je zur Hälfte zu den entsprechenden Carbonsäuren und Alkoholen unter dem Einfluss von Alkalien) eröffnete für die organische Chemie neue präparative Möglichkeiten.
